Au Pair Jobs
A popular job for those looking to work abroad is working as an au pair. An au pair is a person
who gives in-home assistance to a family, primarily helping to care for children but also assisting with additional tasks like cleaning and cooking. Usually, an au pair will work for up to eight hours a day (although sometimes it’s far less than that), and also have several days a week off. Au pair jobs can be a lot of fun, but make sure to do your homework and check references.
Some au pairs also help to teach children English skills. As a result, English speaking au pairs are often in demand, especially in countries where speaking English is seen as an important skill.
Working as an au pair during your travels is a great idea for several reasons. Firstly, you’ll be living with a local family, which is great for really getting involved in a place and learning what it’s like to live like a local. For those living in non-English speaking countries, it’s also a brilliant way to improve your local language skills. Often, au pairs become like family themselves and are invited to events with the family they are living with.
Being an au pair is also great for your budget. As an au pair, your main expenses are generally covered since you will live and eat with the family. Some families may also provide a vehicle for use, as well as additional ‘pocket money’ for discretionary spending.
What Skills Do You Need for Au Pairing?
Generally, no formal qualifications are required to be an au pair, however a genuine love for children is definitely a plus!
Some qualifications that would be desirable for au pairing would be qualifications in child care, early learning, children’s development, and teaching.
