What is the Working Holiday Maker program?

The Working Holiday Maker program allows young adults (18 to 30) from eligible partner countries to work in Australia while having an extended holiday. Work in Australia must not be the main purpose of the visa holder’s visit. The Working Holiday Maker program includes the Working Holiday (subclass 417) and Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visas.

These visa is for young people who want to holiday and work in Australia for up to a year.

How to Apply for an Australian Working Holiday Visa

If you apply online and provide us with a valid email address, you can minimise delays in the processing of your application.

Prepare your documents
You need to provide documents to prove the claims you make in the application. The documents are listed in the Document checklist. (see above link)

Some documents could take some time to obtain. You should have them ready when you lodge the application to reduce any delays in processing.

Lodge your application online
If you do not have any dependent children, you can apply for this visa online:
First Working Holiday visa: Application for a Working Holiday visa
Second Working Holiday visa (outside Australia): Application for a Working Holiday visa
Second Working Holiday visa (in Australia): Application for a Working Holiday visa.

You must provide all relevant documents and pay the visa application charge by credit card when you apply.

You should provide an email address that we can use to communicate with you about your application.

You are not able to apply online if you have any dependent children. You must use the paper application form and apply by post or in person.

<strong>First Working Holiday visa:</strong>
Lodge your application at one of the immigration offices outside Australia, which will tell you how you can pay. There is also further information available on the methods of payment accepted by our offices.

<strong>Second Working Holiday visa:</strong>
Lodge your paper application at the Cairns office in Queensland – attention Cairns Second Working Holiday Centre. Note: You can lodge this application by post only.

First Work and Holiday visa – If you are from the USA you can apply for a first Work and Holiday visa online.
Second Work and Holiday visa – Applicants from all countries can apply for a second Work and Holiday visa online.
You must provide all relevant documents and pay the visa application charge by credit card when you apply.

Lodge your application by post or in person

First Work and Holiday visa
Only applicants from the USA can apply online.
Applicants from all other countries, as well as those from the USA who cannot apply online, should use the Form 1208 Application for a Work and Holiday Visa (192KB PDF).
You must provide all relevant documents and pay the visa application charge when you apply.
If you are from the USA, lodge your first Work and Holiday visa application at any one of the immigration offices outside Australia.
If you are from Argentina, Bangladesh, Chile, Indonesia, Israel, Thailand or Turkey lodge your first Work and Holiday visa application at the Australian Immigration office of your country of passport.
If you are from Malaysia lodge your first Work and Holiday visa application in person at the Australian Visa Application Centre in Kuala Lumpur.
If you are from Vietnam, lodge your first Work and Holiday Visa application in person at an Australian Visa Application Centre in Vietnam.
If you are from the People’s Republic of China lodge your first Work and Holiday visa application in person and by appointment at an Australian Visa Application Centre in China. Further information on appointment and application requirements is available on the Australian Embassy Beijing website.
If you are from Hungary, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal, San Marino, Slovak Republic, Slovenia or Spain lodge your first Work and Holiday visa application at the Australian Immigration office in Berlin, by post only.
If you are from Uruguay lodge your first Work and Holiday application at the Australian Immigration office in Buenos Aires.

Second Work and Holiday visa
If you cannot apply for a second Work and Holiday visa online, lodge your paper application at the Brisbane Office in Queensland using the Form 1208 Application for a Work and Holiday Visa (380KB PDF).
