After a six month season in Whistler I felt it was time for a change and had an urge to explore more of BC. I was able to get a job laboring with Three Point Properties in the small town in Port Renfrew through a friend of a friend.
The perks of the job included weekday accommodation and full time access to the company jeep. This meant that me and my friend Charlie spent the weekend working and hanging out in our oceanside apartment in Port Renfrew and then we went camping around various great spots on the island at the weekends. Vancouver Island is one of the most beautiful un-spoilt places that I have ever been. The temperate rain forests lead into a jagged interesting coastline that is great for hiking and exploring.
Port Renfrew is a very quiet town but once I was settled in I really started to appreciate the close knit local community that exists there. The people I worked with were some of the most crazy and interesting people I had ever met.
I enjoyed relaxing on the beach, hiking along the Juan Fuca Trail, Finding and swimming in lakes and listening to stories of people in the one local pub!
The lifestyle is very laid back in summer, the work was physically challenging so most of my free time was spent taking in the scenery and relaxing.
I got the ferry over from Vancouver and got Driven the four hour drive from Victoria by my boss.’,’Tall Tree Lodge during the week was a fully equipped apartment suite overlooking the bay of Port Renfrew.
The weekends were spent at various campsites and accommodations all over the island.

A car is definitely essential living in so far away from any big towns. This also allowed us to make the most of our free time driving to nearby towns and exploring the local area. It would also be great to have a boat. Fishing is huge in the town in the ocean as well as lakes and rivers.
Also I would recommend preparing and signing up to do the West Coast Trail in advance. It is one of the most beautiful hikes in the world but takes some preparation and planning. Unfortunately I never got the chance.
Me and Charlie also volunteered at Tall Tree Festival which takes place every July. This was an awesome experience and was within walking distance of Port Renfrew
It was great I met some really interesting people and learn’t some valuable skills.
